Boston Red Sox hurler and three-time World Series champion (1912, 1915, 1920) Smoky Joe Wood was a 23-game winner in 1911 and followed that up with another 34 wins in 1912, leading the American League in victories, complete games (35), and shutouts (10). In that 2-year span, Wood compiled 57 wins to 22 losses, tossed a no-hitter (07/29/11) and recorded 3 victories in the 1912 World Series over the New York Giants, with his Game 8 victory coming in relief over Giants superstar Christy Mathewson. At the conclusion of Game 8 with the score tied at 2 and the Red Sox batting in the bottom of the 10th, Wood was pinch hit for with Clyde Engle who famously hit the fly bull muffed by Giants CF Fred Snodgrass, leading to the Red Sox clinching later that inning. Snodgrass' personal account of this play can be found in Larry Ritters phenomenal book The Glory of Their Times.

The presented large-format photograph features Smoky Joe Wood at the beginning of his tenure as head coach for the Yale University baseball team where he coached for twenty years (1923-1943). During that time Wood compiled a coaching record of 283-228-1. Clarity of this image is exceptional with minor scuffing to surface of photo, some wear to edges and corners, and a piece missing from the lower right corner. Photo has been mounted to heavy board, which it is partially separating from. Overall dimensions of 16x20.
