Today, the 1998 home run race may seem a distant memory, tainted with allegations of steroid use, but at the time, it was the stuff of legend.  Speculation began before the season opened, as the 1997 season closed with fan favorite Ken Griffey Jr. clubbing 56 home runs, and Mark McGwire hitting 58 between St. Louis and Oakland.  As the 1998 season gained steam, Griffey and McGwire found themselves joined by "Slammin'" Sammy Sosa of Chicago, the three sluggers leapfrogging one another well into the season before McGwire and Sosa began setting the pace in August.  The race was constant news, the games nationally televised as the three players began to challenge the record set in 1961 by Roger Maris.  On September 8 against the Cubs, McGwire broke the record in front of the Maris family, with Sosa playing right field for Chicago.  Few witnesses will ever forget Sosa racing in from right, to embrace McGwire.

McGwire would finish the magical season with an astonishing 70 home runs, with Sosa just four behind, also breaking Maris' record and finishing with 66.  Griffey finished third with 56.  At the time, it was one of the most memorable seasons in baseball history.
